How Does a Wind Generator Work?

Wind generators are often known or referred to as wind turbines - but have you ever wondered how they work? Wind turbines operate high above the ground affixed to a large pole or tower. A propeller is driven by the wind and this rotation is transferred to a shaft and a set of gears, which, in turn, drives a generator to produce current. A small amount of this current powers motors which push the propellers toward the wind for maximum efficiency. The rest of the energy produced runs down the pole in wires, and either charges a battery or runs directly to your home.

There is one downside to wind turbines though: As the wind blows, it produces noise. Fortunately, now, there are other types of wind turbines that produce little or no noise.

And don't forget - if you go away for a weekend or you don't use all the power the turbine produces, you can always sell it back to the grid!
